Frequently asked questions

How is it calculated?
Each expense is split equally between the participants concerned (everyone if nobody is ticked), to the cent: the remaining cents are spread in turn from one expense to the next. For each person, what they paid is compared with their share of the expenses: the difference is what they are owed, or what they owe.
Why so few transfers?
The calculator looks for as few transfers as possible: first a debt equal to a credit (one transfer settles two people), then the person who owes the most pays the person owed the most, and so on. It never takes more transfers than the number of participants minus one.
An expense doesn't concern everyone?
Tick only the participants concerned under “For”: the expense is split between them alone. For different shares (pro rata, custom amounts), use a shared pot in the app.
Is my data stored?
Nothing is stored in the app, and no account is needed: participants and expenses travel in the page address, which is what lets you share the calculation. Like any visited address, it may appear temporarily in the server's technical logs: prefer first names to sensitive information. Up to 20 participants and 50 expenses.
How do I share the result?
The calculation link contains the participants and expenses: send it to the group (“Share” button on a phone, or “Copy the link”). Everyone sees the same result and can change it: a new calculation gives a new link.
How is this different from a shared pot?
The calculator settles up once, at the end. A shared pot, in the app, tracks the group's expenses as they happen: everyone adds their own, with equal or custom shares, money received and repayments already made.
